Fraunhofer CIMD 4D Young Talent Program

Cross-institutional inter- and transdisciplinary vocational training

Promoting young talent is a central concern of the Fraunhofer CIMD for securing young scientists in the section of translational drug research. The Fraunhofer CIMD has built a unique, transdisciplinary young investigator group operating along the 4D concept (drugs, diagnostics, data, devices), which is successively being expanded and extended.

The alliance of core and partner institutes with their expertise and skills has made it possible to create a unique construct for the promotion of young talent at Fraunhofer CIMD, bringing together physicians, natural scientists, data scientists and engineers to promote a common understanding of the various disciplines.

What does promoting young talent mean at CIMD?

The aim is to confront young researchers with transdisciplinary issues and problems from the outset, enabling them to learn how to collaborate in innovative, practice-oriented interdisciplinary projects. In addition to the scientific focus areas of translational research and drug development, digital health and cost-intelligent medicine are further topics addressed in the Fraunhofer CIMD's support of young researchers.

The aim of the program to promote young scientists is to provide sustainable support for the major challenges in drug research. The increasing complexity of immune disorders that have so far been insufficiently treatable requires new approaches. In particular, the transfer of fundamental insights from basic research into the development of novel or improved methods for the prevention, diagnosis or therapy of immune diseases (bench-to-bedside), as well as for the generation of hypotheses based on clinical observations (bedside-to-bench). Sustainability can only be achieved through innovative, practice-oriented and interdisciplinary training opportunities in biomedical research.

‘CIMD's support for young talent offers a wide range of opportunities to network with other young research scientists. I have always found the annual workshops and CIMD summer and winter schools to be particularly valuable – a great mix of interesting specialist lectures, interactive group work and social events.’

Valerie Beneke, spokeswoman for the Fraunhofer CIMD programme for young talent
