real-world laboratories

Real-world laboratories are development environments in which technologies, products or services can be tested and developed under real-world operating conditions. These can be digital platforms, individual rooms, buildings or even entire countries. While traditional laboratories are sterile environments that hide environmental variables, real-world laboratories actively incorporate them. Two real-world laboratories have been established at Fraunhofer CIMD.

Real world Laboratory “4D Clinic”

Immune diseases (ID) present with a wide range of different clinical manifestations and, as systemic diseases, often affect multiple organ systems simultaneously. A good two-thirds of all ID can be assigned to the specialties of rheumatology, dermatology or gastroenterology, with many ID causing symptoms in all three areas at the same time. For the optimal care of patients with IE and the optimal scientific research of specific disease-determining characteristics, a cross-disciplinary, inter- and transdisciplinary approach is therefore essential. This is difficult to implement in clinical routine, since the care of these patients is assigned to different organ-related specialist departments.

At the 4D Clinic, a transdisciplinary team of scientific and medical experts from various fields (rheumatology, dermatology and gastroenterology) is to be set up to ensure interdisciplinary patient care combined with scientific excellence. This will enable integrated scientific approaches to better describe the indications, leading to optimized patient care that always puts the patient first.

In the Fraunhofer podcast “4D Clinic – Cross-Disciplinary Help for People with Immune Disorders”, Prof. Dr. Frank Behrens, deputy director of the Fraunhofer ITMP, explains the uniqueness of the 4D Clinic and what the concept can do for patients and research.

Real world Laboratoy "Data intelligence"

The topic of data evaluation and data exchange is ubiquitous and is particularly important in health research.

The real-world laboratory for data intelligence works together with the Fraunhofer CIMD platforms and projects on the efficient and innovative use of data, for example in the analysis and visualization of high-dimensional patient data or the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

Clinical and preclinical data are combined, analyzed and visualized. One approach is the simplified presentation of a variety of information on the immune status of patients (e.g. clinical findings, deep phenotyping, imaging data, laboratory data, biomarker data, lifestyle data).
